makey thursdays! antique & mercury glass votives

i’ve been seeing this little antiqued glass proj aaaall over the nets. i know, it’s so nothing new, but i was really intrigued and i had to try it. so i did. and oooh, boy, did i love it! so, then i ended up doing a version of my own that’s maybe more like mercury glass. and, well… i loved it, too.

oh yes. pretty glass votives. two versions!

—

antique glass votive
[from ashley via design sponge]

you need: glass votive or vase, gold enamel paint, black enamel
paint, krylon looking glass spray, a squirty bottle of water,
something scrubby like a scrubby sponge or sandpaper,
tape & old magazines for the outside of the glasses

1. tape around the outside of your glass to protect from overspray.
2. squirt the inside of your glass with water to create little beads.
3. spray inside the glass with a good layer of the looking glass paint.
[um, but do this part outside! i woke steven up with major fumes
the night i did this. even with windows open. oops.]

4. turn your glass immediately upside down to drip & dry… either on a drying
rack
or just on top of two upside down paper cups. just so air can get to it!
5. once it dries, do it again! and possibly again but you don’t want the paint to be too thick.
6. once you’re finished with your mirror-y layers, take your scrubby tool
and just scrub off some places inside the glass to make it perfectly imperfect.

7. swirl around the gold & black enamel paint together with your paint brush
and paint a coat inside the glass. you don’t want this to be too thick, either.
[i made mine a little too thick and you can’t see candle light through it so well.]
8. let it dry a while and ta-daaaa! it’s so pretty!

aaaaand changing it up for round two…

mercury glass votives

you need: well, the same stuff.
but i used silver enamel paint this time, too.

1. swirl around the black & gold enamel paint and paint it on the inside of your glass.
2. then, blob your paint brush around the inside so the paint is all splotchy.

3. when your splotchy layer dries, tape & protect the outside of your glass.
4. then, spritz the inside with water a little bit and spray the mirror coating.
5. turn the glass upside down to dry out.
6. when the mirror layer dries, scrub around on it.

7. paint the inside with a mixture of the enamel paints for a looovely third layer.
8. yay!

…and now i may or may not do this stuff to like, everything i can get my hands on. okay, i’ll try not to go overboard, but it would be fun to get a giant huge frame with glass and make a big ole antiqued mirror, right? please say yes.
